Stockton, Calif. – The Pacific offense tallied a season-high 16 runs and 23 hits and Chris Larsen tossed 6.2 shutout innings as the Tigers swept a four-game set from Brown with a 16-6 win Monday at Klein Family Field.
Nine different Tigers drove in runs, while every Pacific hitter who got into the game collected at least one hit. Senior CF/SS Josh Simms picked up four hits and drove in three runs, while junior 3B Dustin Torchio went four-for-six with an RBI. Sophomore C Jason Taasaas added a three-for-four night, while sophomore 2B Curtis Gomez was three-for-six with three RBI.
Freshman LF Taylor Murphy (two-for-three), redshirt freshman 1B Erik Lockwood (two-for-five) and freshman SS Robby Mansfield (one-for-three) each posted two runs batted in. Mansfield hit his first career home run, capping a seven-run third inning for Pacific.
The Tigers fell behind 4-0 in the top of the first, as Pacific committed a pair of errors and three unearned runs came in off LHP Paul Moeller. With one out in the inning, senior RHP Chris Larsen came in out of the pen and slammed the door, and then put up six more zeros on the scoreboard as the Tiger bats got going.
Pacific tallied seven in the third on seven hits. After a leadoff walk, Gomez and Torchio hit back-to-back singles as the Tigers put up a run. With two outs, Pacific reeled off three-straight singles by Lockwood, Taasaas and Murphy to take a 5-4 lead. Mansfield blasted a two-run homer to left, before Brown starter Mark Gormley got out of the inning.
The Tigers added another in the fourth, as sophomore DH Riley Drongesen was hit by pitch and senior RF Allen Riley singled. Drongesen came in on an RBI groundout by Lockwood for an 8-4 lead.
In the bottom of the seventh, the Tigers posted a five-run frame, as Taasaas, Murphy and freshman CF Tyler Sullivan all singled to open the inning. Simms followed with a two-run double to chase RHP Chris Smith. Gomez added a two-run single off of RHP Lucas Whitehall, and Drongesen provided a 13-4 lead with an RBI groundout.
Pacific tacked on three more in the eighth, as Murphy doubled home Taasaas and came in to score on an infield single by Simms. Torchio rounded out the Tigers' scoring with an RBI single off RHP Adam Hoffman.
The Tigers improve to 8-16 on the season, while Brown falls to 1-11.
Pacific posted its first four-game series sweep since taking a five-game set over Coppin State in 2003, although the Tigers had just one four-game series since (Hawaii, 2005). In the series, the Tigers out-scored the Bears 42-14, and posted 14 extra base hits. Pacific hit .441 in the series, led by Simms and Taasaas (.571). Lockwood (.563) collected a team-high nine hits in the series, while 12 Tigers hit .333 or higher in the four-game set.
The Tigers will open Big West play on Friday at UC Irvine, starting a three-game series with the Anteaters at 6:30 p.m.
