Tigers Fall In Game One To Cal Poly

San Luis Obispo, Calif. - The Tigers scored first on an RBI double by senior LF Brett Christopher, but Cal Poly came back with seven unanswered to take game one of a Big West series, 7-1, Friday at Baggett Stadium. Senior RF Allen Riley tripled and scored for Pacific, while redshirt freshman 1B Erik Lockwood was two-for-four with a pair of doubles.

With one out in the top of the second, Riley drove a pitch to the wall in right center for his first triple of the season, and Christopher followed with a double to right for a 1-0 Pacific lead. But Cal Poly RHP Joey Wagman got out of the inning with a fly ball, leaving Christopher at third.

The Mustangs knotted the game up at one in the bottom of the third inning as catcher Chris Hoo reached on a two-base error in centerfield, and after advancing on a groundout, scored on an RBI grounder from DH Tim Wise.

Cal Poly CF Mitch Haniger doubled down the left field line to open the second, and after an infield single by 3B Jimmy Allen set up first and third, Tiger starter RHP Michael Benson got a double play ball from LF/RF David Armendariz. Pacific turned two, but with no body out, the go-ahead run came in for a 2-1 lead.

Freshman CF Tyler Sullivan ended Wagman's stretch of retiring 10 straight by doubling to right center with two out in the fifth, but he was left stranded.

The Mustangs added a run in the fifth when Hoo singled to left, 2B Evan Busby walked and and Wise singled to left to make it 3-1.

Pacific set the table in the seventh, as freshman 2B Taylor Murphy singled up the middle, but Riley's line drive was snared by Busby at second, and Poly doubled off Murphy.

In the bottom half of the seventh, the Mustangs blew the game open, as Tommy Pluschkell walked, and after a fly out and a fielder's choice, five straight Mustangs reached. SS Mike Miller walked, and Wise hit a three-run homer to left. His first of the season made it a 6-1 ballgame. Haniger followed with a double to left to chase Benson, and Allen greeted RHP Bryce Lombardi with an RBI single before Lombardi got a soft liner to end the inning.

Junior LHP Travis Lumby pitched a perfect eighth, and Lockwood doubled off RHP Michael Holback in the ninth, but was stranded at third as the Mustangs closed it out in the ninth.

Five of Pacific's six hits were for extra bases, but the Tigers (11-28) were one-for-seven with runners in scoring position to fall to 1-9 in Big West play.

Benson (2-6) went 6.2 innings, allowing seven hits and six earned while striking out three. The home run by Wise was just the second Benson has allowed this season. Wagman lasted eight innings, allowing one earned on five hits with a pair of strikeouts to improve to 6-3.

Wise finished two-for-four with four runs batted in for Cal Poly (23-17, 7-6 Big West).

Game two is slated for a 6 p.m. first pitch Saturday at Baggett Stadium.
