San Luis Obispo, Calif. - Curtis Gomez doubled twice as part of a three-for-four night, and Erik Lockwood added a pair of RBI, but Pacific fell to Cal Poly, 15-4, Saturday night at Baggett Field.
Senior DH Daniel Johnston added a two-for-three day with a double.
Making his first start of the year at third base, the sophomore Gomez doubled in the third and ninth innings, while adding a single in the fifth, and scoring all three times. Lockwood, Pacific's redshirt freshman first baseman, singled in a run in third and fifth innings as part of a two-for-four night. The two runs batted in were his seventh multi-RBI game of the season.
However, Cal Poly scored in each of the first six innings, manufacturing a run in the first, and tallying a pair of solo homers in the second off LHP Kyle Crawford. Crawford (2-6) had not allowed a homer all season, but was taken over the left field wall by C Chris Hoo and SS Mike Miller in the second. He departed after two innings, with Cal Poly leading 3-0.
In the third, Gomez doubled to the right field corner and took third on a ground out. After SS Josh Simms walked, Lockwood singled through the left side to get the Tigers on the board. Simms and Lockwood executed a double-steal to set up second and third, but the Tigers couldn't tie the game as Poly LHP Kyle Anderson posted the strikeout to end the inning.
CF Mitch Haniger greeted Pacific senior RHP John Prato Matthews with a solo homer in the third, Haniger's Big West-leading ninth of the year. In the fourth, Poly blew the game open with a pair of singles from the bottom of the lineup, a pair of hit by pitches to score the first run of the inning, and a bases-clearing three-run double by 3B Jimmy Allen.
In the fifth, Gomez singled and senior LF Brett Christopher tripled to right center to cut the margin to 8-2 with no body out. After a pair of groundouts failed to bring home Christopher, Lockwood pick up his second RBI single with a liner to right center.
Poly added three more in the fifth, as PH Ryan Drobny and Hoo walked, then 2B Evan Busby singled home a run off RHP Chris Larsen. Miller singled in another run and Haniger added an RBI single to stretch the lead to 11-3.
In the sixth, Cal Poly tacked on three more off RHP Thomas Berolzheimer, on RBI singles from Busby and PH/DH Alex Michaels.
Berolzheimer tossed a 1-2-3 seventh, but Michaels tripled home Miller in the eighth for a 15-3 lead.
In the Pacific ninth, Gomez led off with a double to the left field corner, and freshman CF Tyler Sullivan singled through the right side to cap the scoring.
The Tigers finished with 10 hits in the ballgame, but Cal Poly racked up 18. Nine of Pacific's 16 hits in the series have gone for extra bases.
Miller turned in his first career five-hit game for Cal Poly (24-17, 8-6 Big West). LHP Kyle Anderson (7-1) picked up the win with six innings, and three earned runs. RHP Danny Zandona earned his first save by completing the final three innings, allowing a run on three hits.
Pacific falls to 11-30 on the season (1-10 BWC). The Tigers will look to avoid the sweep in Sunday's game three at 1 p.m.
