Dons Post Midweek Win over Pacific, 5-2

Stockton, Calif. - Three runs in the first was enough to hold up for San Francisco as they took a midweek contest from Pacific, 5-2, Tuesday at Klein Family Field. Senior 3B Josh Simms went two for three with a walk a steal and a pair of runs scored.

Pacific posted a pair of runs, tallying one each in the seventh and ninth, but the Dons scored three runs in the top of the first and tacked on a run in the fourth and a run in the seventh.

In the first, CF Justin Maffei walked and stole second and third before 2B Jason Mahood singled him home. 3B Adam Clear followed with a single and with one out, LF Matt Chavez poked a grounder through the left side for a 2-0 lead. Clear came in to score on a wild pitch before senior RHP Jared Wagner struck out RF Bradley Zimmer to end the inning.

Senior LHP Joe Spizzirri tossed a pair of shutout innings before USF picked up a run in the fourth. Zimmer and SS Jourdan Weiks singled to open the inning and after a sacrifice bunt, Maffei hit a sacrifice fly to left to stretch the margin to 5-0.

In the seventh, the Dons added a run off senior RHP Thomas Berolzheimer with a walk, a single and a sacrifice fly before ground ball ended the inning.

The Tigers got on the scoreboard in their half of the seventh as Simms walked, stole second with two out, and sophomore 2B Curtis Gomez singled to left.

In the Pacific ninth, Simms doubled high off the wall in left center, advanced to third when freshman PH Michael Hager's grounder to the left side couldn't be handled and scored on a shallow pop behind first base by freshman C Dallas Correa. But USF RHP Jordan Remer recorded the final two outs to end the threat, stranding a pair of runners on base.

RHP Andrew Pulido (2-2) picked up the win of San Francisco (24-28), tossing three innings and allowing just a single by Simms in the second. LHP Sheldon Lee tossed three innings of two-hit ball, as freshman DH Taylor Murphy singled in the fourth, and senior SS Garret Borba singled in the sixth.

Wagner fell to 0-2 on the year, allowing three earned in one inning of work, striking out one. Spizzirri allowed one earned in four innings, on four hits with one K. Senior RHP Chris Larsen tossed a hitless sixth inning, while junior LHP Travis Lumby (eighth) and RHP Bryce Lombardi (ninth) each allowed a hit in shutout inning of work.

The Tigers (11-35) will play host to UC Riverside in a three-game Big West series starting Friday at 6 pm at Klein Family Field.
