Stockton, Calif. - Tyger Pederson doubled twice and drove in three runs and Allen Riley added three hits as the Tigers posted a 7-4 win over Cal State Northridge Friday at Klein Family Field.
Senior RF Allen Riley, junior 2B Tyger Pederson and freshman DH Taylor Murphy unloaded three consecutive doubles in the second inning, and the Tigers never looked back after the four-run frame. Pederson added an RBI fielder's choice and a RBI double in the eighth.
Freshman RHP Michael Benson allowed two earned runs in seven innings, striking out three to improve to 3-9 on the year and lower his ERA to 3.34.
Cal State Northridge opened up the top of the first with a bases loaded walk to RF Miles Williams, plating 2B Ryan Raslowsky, who singled for the only hit of the inning.
Riley opened the bottom of the season with a double to the wall in left, and Pederson then ripped his first double down the left field line to tie the game at 1-1. Murphy sliced his double into the left field corner to give Pacific the lead, and after sophomore 3B/2B Curtis Gomez walked and a sacrifice advanced the runners, senior LF Brett Christopher added an RBI groundout. Senior SS Josh Simms followed with a single through the hole on the left side to cap the scoring in the four-run second.
Northridge answered with a run in the third, as 1B Cal Vogelsang doubled to left, and LF Adam Barry followed with a single in the hole at short.
Pacific got the run back up in their half of the third inning, as Drongesen singled to right field, and Riley pulled a single down the line in right. Pederson legged out a grounder up the middle which nabbed Riley at second for a run-scoring fielder's choice.
In the Northridge fifth, Vogelsang singled and after a fielder's choice, DH Steven Keller doubled to cut the Tigers' lead to 5-3.
Pacific tacked on in the eighth, as Riley singled to left center and Pederson brought him home with a double the other way, into the left-field corner. Gomez brought home Pederson with a grounder towards the middle that led to a throwing error and a 7-3 Pacific lead.
Benson departed after seven and after junior LHP Travis Lumby struck out two in his hitless eighth, the Matadors eked out a run off of RHP John Prato Matthews. PH Tommy Simis tapped a dribbler up the middle to get aboard, took second on a wild pitch and after a single by Raslowsky, Vogelsang beat out a fielder's choice to plate Simis. Prato Matthews responded with a fly out and then punched out CF Nate Ring to end the ballgame.
Northridge (23-28) fall to 10-12 in the Big West as RHP Alex Muren took the loss. Muren allowed six earned runs on 10 hits, walking two and striking out four in 7.2 innings. His record drops to 5-8 on the year.
Simms finished the night two-for-four for Pacific with an RBI, while freshman CF Tyler Sullivan went one-for-two with a sacrifice and a pair of sliding grabs in center. Riley added a sliding catch of his own in right field.
The Tigers (14-40) improve to 4-18 in Big West play. Game two is set for a 1 p.m. first pitch Saturday.
