Pacific's Two-Run Ninth Sinks TCU, 5-3


Ft. Worth, Texas - Senior PH/2B Tyger Pederson's ninth-inning RBI provided the winning run as the Pacific baseball team rallied to beat TCU Saturday at Lupton Stadium.

Sophomore 1B Erik Lockwood drove in two runs on a two-for-three day with a double, while freshman DH Brett Sullivan added three hits, an RBI and a run scored in five at bats. Senior SS Dustin Torchio finished the afternoon two-for-four with an RBI and a run scored.

The Tigers tallied twice in the top of the first, and after the Horned Frogs picked up runs in the first and second, Pacific took a 3-2 lead in the fifth. TCU answered with a run in the bottom of the eighth, but the Tigers scored two runs on a pair of hits in the ninth for the win.

Pacific improves to 5-8 on the season, while TCU falls to 4-9.

Brett Sullivan singled to open the ballgame, and after a one-out single by Torchio, Lockwood delivered a two-run double to the right field wall for a 2-0 Pacific lead.

In the bottom of the first, RF Dylan Fitzgerald tripled to left on a wind-blown fly ball, and came in to score on a single by DH Boomer White. The Horned Frogs added a run in the bottom of the second, as 2B Paul Hendrix doubled and moved to third on a groundout. Kyle Bacak slapped a ball down to third, and Hendrix slid in under the tag for a game-tying fielder's choice.

The Tigers pushed ahead in the firth, as Brett Sullivan singled and was replaced by J.J. Wagner on a fielder's choice. Wagner took off on a 0-1 pitch to Torchio, and came all the way around to score on the single to the right-centerfield gap.

Pacific starter RHP Cory Popham pitched not the eighth, retiring 10 of 11 at one point with back-to-back seven-pitch innings in the sixth and seventh.

In the eighth, Jantzen Witte singled to open the inning, and after a sacrifice bunt, PH Kevin Cron, mired in a 4-for-49 slump to open the season, poked a game-tying single to center off LHP Kyle Crawford.

RHP Kevin Hammann entered, coaxed a ground ball to Lockwood, who teamed with Torchio for a slick 3-6-3 double play to end the inning.

Murphy opened the ninth with a single up the middle off TCU RHP Nick Frey , and after C Jason Taasaas moved him over with a bunt, RHP Justin Scharf hit Tyler Sullivan with a pitch and was promptly replaced by RHP Alex Mitchell.

Mitchell threw a wild pitch to PH Tyger Pederson, moving the runners up, and Pederson pulled a groundout to second base to plate Murphy with the game-winning run.

Brett Sullivan plated his brother Tyler with a single to center to cap the scoring, and Hammann provided three ground ball outs in the ninth for his second win of the season.

Popham finished with three earned runs allowed in 7.1 innings, striking out a pair and giving up nine hits. His shutout streak came to an end at six innings in the no decision.

Hammann retired four of five batters faced, not allowing a hit in 1.2 innings of work to improve to 2-0 on the year.

TCU LHP Brandon Finnegan lasted five innings, allowing eight hits and three earned runs. Frey (0-1) tossed 3.1 innings, allowing one earned, while the final run was charged to Scharf.

Pacific evened the series at a game a piece with the rubber match Sunday at 1 p.m. Central, 11 a.m. Pacific. RHP Michael Benson (2-0) will face TCU LHP Trevor Seidenberger (1-0).
