Jenkins Hurls Gem, But Tigers Fall 1-0 to No. 21 UC Irvine

Stockton, Calif. - Freshman RHP Jake Jenkins tossed eight innings, allowing just four hits, but No. 21 UC Irvine's starter RHP Andrew Morales scattered seven hits over 8.1 innings for a 1-0 victory over Pacific Sunday at Klein Family Field.

With a short staff available in the bullpen, Jenkins stepped up with a career-best performance, striking out four and walking none. He surrendered just four hits, but the Anteaters pushed across a run in the third on a hit by pitch, a sacrifice, and a seeing-eye RBI single through the left side by CF Dominique Taylor for the lone run of the game.

"Jake did a tremendous job," head coach Ed Sprague said. "The bullpen was light and he gave us an outstanding effort. It's a crazy game sometimes; yesterday we have 12 hits and score 14 runs, and today we have seven hits and can't get a run on the board."

Morales, now 9-0 on the year, allowed seven hits as he pitched into the ninth. Freshman DH Gio Brusa and senior 2B Tyger Pederson rapped out back-to-back two out singles in the second, but Morales coaxed an infield groundout to end the inning.

The Tigers' duo of Brusa and Pederson also had back-to-back singles in the fourth with two out, but Morales posted a strikeout to end the frame

After allowing the run in the third inning, Jenkins retired the side in order in the fourth, and used a line-out double play to erase a lead-off hit batter in the fifth.

In the Pacific fifth, sophomore CF Tyler Sullivan walked with one out and sophomore 1B Erik Lockwood singled through the right side, but Morales forced an infield ground out to end the game.

RF Taylor Murphy singled in the seventh with one out, but Morales coaxed another ground ball and a double-play ended the inning. Twelve of Morales' 25 outs came via the ground ball, and another eight via strikeout.

The Anteaters put the leadoff man on in the eighth on a bunt single by RF Scott Gottschling, but after a sacrifice bunt, Jenkins forced a pair of groundouts to first, covering the bag to keep it a 1-0 ballgame.

Jenkins (0-5) gave way in the ninth to RHP Patrick Weigel, who retired the side on five pitches.

Morales posted a strikeout on his 125th pitch and left with one out in the ninth. RHP Race Parmenter entered and recorded back-to-back strikeouts to close the ballgame for his seventh save.

The Tigers fall to 10-24 overall, 3-9 in the Big West. The Anteaters move to 25-11 overall, 7-5 in conference play.

Pacific is back in action on Tuesday, at Nevada at 6 p.m.
