Baseball Cruises To 8-1 Win At Santa Clara
Santa Clara, Calif. - Jason Taasaas' two-run single in the third gave Pacific the lead for good and the Tigers piled on late for an 8-1 win at Santa Clara Tuesday.
Taasaas, the Tigers' catcher, and 3B Dustin Torchio each finished two-for-four with a pair of RBI, while CF Tyler Sullivan drove in two. LF Gio Brusa hit his second home run of the season.
The Tigers collected seven two-out hits in the ballgame, and scored seven of their eight runs with two outs.
The Pacific bullpen combined for six shutout innings as five Tigers' pitchers allowed six hits in the ballgame.
Brusa hammered the first pitch of the second inning over the right field wall for his second homer in three games and a 1-0 Pacific lead.
In the bottom of the third, Santa Clara strung together a pair of a hits, tying the game on Justine Viele's RBI double. The run and two hits were all Pacific starter LHP Kyle Crawford would allow in his three innings of work.
In the fourth, Torchio singled to left, advanced to second on a groundout and to third on a wild pitch. With two away, 2B Tyger Pederson walked and stole second, and then Taasaas delivered a single up the middle for a 3-1 lead.
RHP Nick Viola (1-0) pitched the fourth, working around a lead-off double with a pair of strikeouts.
RHP Mike Hager allowed just one hit in his two innings of work, before LHP Travis Lumby tossed two shutout innings with two hits allowed.
In the ninth,Santa Clara LHP Max Deering struck out the first two batters before Taasaas stroked a double down the right field line, SS Brett Sullivan walked and DH Robby Mansfield singled through the right side for an insurance run.
Tyler Sullivan followed with a single up the middle to plate two more runs. RF Taylor Murphy singled to keep the inning going, and Torchio capped the scoring with a two-run single to left.
RHP Bryce Lombardi tossed a 1-2-3 ninth to close the ballgame.
Pacific 12-31) won back-to-back games for the first time this season. Santa Clara falls to 10-36.
The Tigers open a three-game Big West series against UC Davis Friday at Klein Family Field.
