Baseball's Rally Falls Short At Florida State

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - The Pacific baseball team rallied to erase an 8-1 deficit Friday at Florida State, but the Seminoles won the first game of the four-game series, 9-8 on an eighth inning home run from Dylan Busby.

Down 8-1 after two innings, Pacific posted two runs in the fourth and five in the seventh to tie the game at 8-8. Danny Mayer finished 2-for-4 with two RBI, while James Free II was 2-for-5 with three runs driven in. Lucas Halstead reached base four times as he went 1-for-2 with a double, an RBI and three walks. Kevin Sandri finished 2-for-4 with an RBI.


The Seminoles posted six runs in the first, as Quincy Nieporte picked up a two-run single, and after a pair of walks and a sacrifice fly, Tyler Holton delivered a three-run home run.

The Tigers answered in the second with a double from Ryan Schalch and a single by Mayer to cut the deficit to 6-1. But in the bottom of the second, Florida State tacked on two more on four singles from Busby, Rhett Aplin, Jackson Lueck, and Drew Mendoza.

In the fourth, the Tigers began to slash into the Seminoles' lead, as Free singled to left and after Mayer was hit by pitch, Halstead delivered an RBI double. Blake Barry plated Mayer with an RBI groundout before the inning came to a close.

The Tigers rallied for five runs in the seventh inning. After a single to right field from Sandri to score Barry, who reached after being hit by a pitch, and a base clearing-double from Free brought the Tigers within one. After a Florida State pitching change, Schalch drew a walk to bring up Mayer. Mayer tied up the game, 8-8 with a single through the left side to plate Free. Florida State went to the pen again, and a pass ball moved Schalch and Mayer into scoring position with two outs. Halstead then drew his third walk of the game to load the bases for Barry, but Jim Voyles recorded a strikeout to finally end the inning for Florida State.

Vince Arobio entered for the Tigers replacing the starter, Justin Giovannoni, and posted a shutdown inning in the bottom of the seventh. But the Tigers stranded two on base following singles by Sandri and Matt Tarantino.

In the bottom of the eighth, Arobio recorded the first two outs, but Busby put a 3-1 pitch over the wall in left.

Drew Carlton recorded his second shutout inning in the ninth to pick up the win for Florida State, and improve to 3-3.

The Seminoles improve to 28-18 on the season.

Giovannoni took the no-decision, allowing eight earned in six innings with a pair of strikeouts. Arobio (3-4) was saddled with the loss, allowing just the home run as the lone hit surrendered in his two innings of work. He punched out two batters.

The Tigers fall to 15-27 on the year.

Pacific and Florida State will play a doubleheader on Saturday starting at 11 a.m. Both games will be available on WatchESPN.com.
