SANTA CLARA, Calif. - The Pacific baseball team dropped a midweek contest at Santa Clara, 10-6, as the Broncos posted a three-run sixth inning. Senior LF Matt Carvutto (Poway, Calif.) posted a pair of RBI, going two-for-five with a double while junior SS Josh Simms (La Mesa, Calif.) ran his hit streak to 10 consecutive games.

The Tigers jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning as sophomore 2B Tyger Pederson (Palo Alto, Calif.) singled and scored on a double to left by Carvutto. Senior 1B Brian Martin (Livermore, Calif.) followed with an RBI single to left.

Pacific extended the lead to 3-0 in the second when freshman C Jason Taaasaas (Elk Grove, Calif.) singled, stole second base and came in to score when Carvutto delivered again, this time with an RBI single to center field.

But the Broncos chipped into the lead with two in the bottom of the second, as 1B Curtis Wagner singled to right field, and DH Matt Ozanne walked. CF Steven Takahashi doubled to left center to bring home Wagner, and after sophomore RHP Brent McMinn (Houston, Texas) replaced redshirt freshman LHP Andrew Wild (Visalia, Calif.), 3B Blake Leyva singled to center to cut the Tigers' lead to 3-2. McMinn charged off the mound on a bunt attempt to keep the tying run at third, and then punched out Lucas Herbst to end the inning.

The Tigers picked up one run back in the third as junior DH Daniel Johnston (Portola Valley, Calif.) singled to left and freshman Curtis Gomez (Watsonville, Calif.), making his first start in center field, ripped a double off the first baseman's glove and down the right field line to set up second and third with one out. Taasaas grounded out to shortstop to plate Johnston, but Santa Clara's Max Deering coaxed a fly out to end the inning.

Santa Clara tallied a run in their half of the third when the Tigers couldn't turn a double play. With runners on first and second with one out, LHP John Haberman (Stockton, Calif.) induced a ground ball to short, but the relay throw to first was wild, allowing Drew Ozanne to score.

In the fourth, the Broncos tied the game at 4-4 with another unearned run off Haberman. After a walk, a passed ball and a wild pitch, 3B Kyle DeMerritt grounded out to third to bring home Leyva to even the score.

Pacific answered in the sixth as a two-base error in centerfield put Simms on second with one out. After single by Pederson, Simms came in to score on a wild pitch as the Tigers led 5-4.

But in the bottom of the frame, Santa Clara picked up three runs off sophomore RHP Jonas Noack (San Diego, Calif.). Back-to-back one out walks to Leyva and SS Justin Viele set up a two-run single by DeMerritt as Santa Clara went in front, 6-5. After freshman LHP Kyle Crawford (Modesto, Calif.) entered, C Patrick Terry provided the third run of the inning on an RBI fielder's choice.

The Tigers pulled within one in the top of the seventh, as Martin and junior RF Allen Riley (Fresno, Calif.) each walked to open the inning. After a fielder's choice, junior CF Brett Christopher (Livermore, Calif.) plated Martin with a sacrifice fly.

In the seventh, Santa Clara tallied two more runs, on a walk, stolen base and a single to center by Leyva off RHP Jacob Sylvester (Livermore, Calif.), the first hit Sylvester has allowed this season in three outings. Leyva took second on an error in the outfield, and came in to score on an RBI groundout off freshman RHP Peter Miller (Santa Cruz, Calif.).

The Broncos tacked on an insurance run in the eighth on a double from Wagner and single from Takahashi.

Noack (0-1) took the loss for Pacific, as the Tigers fall to 14-23 on the year. Chris Mendoza (3-5) earned the win for Santa Clara (15-22) as each team used eight pitchers in the ballgame. Pederson and Carvutto each finished two-for-five, while Riley and Johnston posted two-for-four ballgames.

Pacific will visit No. 10 Cal State Fullerton for a three-game Big West series starting Friday at 7 p.m.
