Burlington, Iowa - Just as he did in the first tournament of the season, freshman Tyler Burnes paced the Tigers' golf team on day one of the Golfweek Conference Challenge at the par 72, 7,223 yard Spirit Hollow Golf Course in Burlington, Iowa. Burnes shot a +4, 76 during the opening round of play to finish in a tie for 48th overall after 18 holes.
Getting off to a steady start, Burnes birdied the par-5, 4th to start one-under through the first nine holes of action. Getting caught out-of-bounds on the 10th, Burnes fought back with six-straight pars before closing out his round with a pair of bogeys on holes 17 and 18 to finish the day with a 76. Senior SeungJae Maeng carded a team-best five birdies in the round and finished one shot back of Burnes in the standings.
As a team, the Tigers finished at +22 with a team score of 310. North Carolina State leads all teams at -19, 12 shots clear of Charleston Southern. Four players are tied for the lead individually after posting an opening-round score of 66.
Second round play begins on Saturday at 7:00 am PT. The Tigers tee off at 8:00 am PT with senior Matt Lee starting things off from hole 10 alongside of golfers from Army and Furman.
