Stockton, Calif. - Coach Brandon Goethals and the Pacific golf team will head to Atlanta this weekend to take part in the prestigious Callaway Match-Play Championship. An elite 16-team field of the top ranked teams in the nation will meet at Hawks Ridge Golf Club starting Sunday. The Tigers, who've been on a fast track up the national rankings lately, have been seeded 12th in the field and will play 2009 NCAA National Champion Texas A&M in the first round.
The Tigers line-up of TJ Bordeaux, Patrick Kucich, Alex Johnson, Alex Edfort and Danny Garcia will begin play against the Aggies on Sunday, March 20th with the winner to face either #4 seed Illinois or #13 Baylor in the Elite Eight. Top ranked UCLA earned the #1 seed with SEC's Alabama in the #2 spot.
"We've got a tough draw in the first round, playing the former national champs (Texas A&M) but we're excited for this match-play opportunity," said head coach Brandon Goethals. "The way we've been playing these last few months I think we're deservedly a team to be noticed and this is something we've been looking forward to."
While that success has been team oriented as the Tigers won the Pacific Invitational and then finished third at Arizona and second at the Fresno Lexus, it is the product of great individual that has the Tigers poised for a run in the match-play event. Alex Johnson took home individual honors at the Lexus Classic last weekend for his second collegiate victory and both Bordeaux and Kucich marched through the San Francisco City Championship, destined for an all-Pacific final before both succumbed in the semifinals on Sunday. Bordeaux lost in extra holes to Brandon Hagy while Kucich fell 2&1 to Jack Persons.
