Stockton, Calif. – The men's soccer team continued their winning ways Friday night as they took down visiting Drake 3-1 in their regular season opener. The Orange and Black have yet to drop a game in 2016 after going a perfect 2-0 in the preseason.
The Bulldogs got on the board first in the 20th minute on a chip shot from Ben LeMay that just soared over Curtis Goldsmith's head to give Drake a 1-0 lead. Shortly after in the 26th minute, Pacific was able to answer when sophomore Camden Riley squeezed it past the Drake 'keeper from the left side of the box to knot the game at one. The game wasn't tied long before freshman Anthony Orendain netted his first collegiate goal in the 28th minute on cross from fellow midfielder Esteban De La Torre.
In the 36th minute Johnatan Rico-Contreres joined the scoring party and logged his first collegiate goal on a chip shot that sailed over the Bulldog goalie. In a heads up play, the sophomore caught the 'keeper wandering out and booted it over his head 35 yards out to give the Tigers a commanding 3-1 lead heading into the break.
"Camden and Anthony getting goals back-to-back was a real energetic response to what could have been very detrimental for us," says head coach Ryan Jorden. "The quality and the mental shift we have on the team right now is great. Nothing fazes them and I think that's great."
The Tigers out-shot the Bulldogs 14-2 in the contest, giving them the third-most shots ever taken in a game. Ten different Tigers registered shots, making coach Jorden very happy with the ball movement.
"Our guys know we have really good quality throughout the team," continues Jorden. "The three guys who scored from us were all from midfield and that just shows we have guys that can join the attack and have the ability to spread the ball all over."
The Tigers hope to make it two in a row when they travel to San Jose State on Sunday to battle the Spartans. Live stats will be available for the 1 PM contest.
