STOCKTON, Calif. - Another day, another award for the Pacific men's soccer team as Wouter Verstraaten has been named HERO Sports' HERO of the Week, the publication announced today. Verstraaten earned 518 votes (45.56% of the total votes) to earn this distinction.
The recognition comes days after Verstraaten earned West Coast Conference Player of the Week honors for the first time in his career. The defender logged two game-winning goals over this past weekend to help Pacific cap off a perfect 2-0 JMU Invitational. On Friday against Virginia Tech, Verstraaten scored in the 83rd minute to put Pacific up 1-0 as he brought the ball up the left side and punched it in for the score. On Sunday against James Madison the Tigers were tied 1-1 when Verstraaten tapped it in past the keeper in the 85th minute of regulation to give the Tigers a 2-1 lead and the eventual victory.
Verstraaten becomes the second Pacific soccer player to be named HERO of the Week after Lena Perry of Pacific women's soccer earned the plaudit last season.
The Dutchman and the rest of the No. 23 Tigers take on UNLV on the road tonight at 7 PM before returning home this Sunday to battle Grand Canyon at 7 PM. A live stream against the Lopes will be available and admission to Knoles Field is free for all fans.
