Stockton, Calif. - Taking on regional rival Sacramento State, the Pacific men's tennis team snapped a two match skid on the strength of its singles play with a 4-2 victory over the Hornets on Tuesday, April 10. The win improved Pacific's record to 7-11 on the year while the Hornets fell to 8-12 overall.
Heading to the courts for singles action first due to impending rain, the Tigers used their home court advantage to dispatch the visiting Hornets at the Hal Nelson Tennis Courts. Jumping out to a quick lead against the Hornets, the Tigers took the first three singles matches that came to a completion to grab total control of the match. Jumping starting the Tigers' day, senior Ivan Castro made quick work of Javier Millan at No. 2 singles, 7-6, 6-0 to post the first point of the day for Pacific. With Castro finished, freshman Erik Cederwall defeated Sean Kolar at the No. 4 position, 7-5, 6-3 just before freshman Valentim Goncalves Jr. took down Roy Brandys at No. 5 singles, 6-3, 7-6(4) to give the Tigers, a 3-0 lead.
Up 3-0, the Tigers saw their lead cut to just one point as the Hornets captured points at No. 3 and No. 6 singles before Pacific's put the match away with a victory at the top spot of the order. After dropping the first set of the match at No. 1 to Aliaksandr Malko, freshman Ben Mirkin recovered to take the final two sets of play and secure the match for the Tigers as Mirkin took home a 5-7, 6-4, 6-1 victory in what would be the final match of the day for both teams.
