STOCKTON, Calif. - Head coach Ryan Redondo has announced the addition of Mikayel Khachatryan, who becomes the second signee of the men's tennis program this week. Khachatryan will transfer to Pacific from the Armenian State Institute of Physical Culture and Sport.
"I am extremely excited about the signing of Mikayel Khachatryan to the Pacific Tiger tennis program." said coach Redondo. "Mikayel and I have gotten to know each other quite well throughout the recruiting process and I am really impressed by his dedication and passion."
A native of Armenia, Khachatryan trained at the Bruguera Tennis Academy in Spain and was coached by Fernando Luna and Sergi Bruguera, who is a former French Open Champion. He is a two-time Armenian Cup and Pan Armenian Games champion, and holds a professional ATP ranking in doubles. The #1-ranked Davis Cup player for Armenia in juniors and seniors took first place in this year's Davis Cup competition.
"Mikayel has been training with some of the top players in the world, coached by a Grand Slam Champion, and has played in one the highest competitions in tennis, the Davis Cup. These experiences will serve him very well in college," continued Redondo. "I believe Mikayel has a very bright future on the ATP tour and I am really excited to work with him and help guide him to his dreams. Mikayel is joining a very young and talented team that will be developing together for quite some time on and off the court here in Stockton."
"I chose Pacific because of the high ranking it has amongst private institutions, along with the high level of tennis and educational success that I can combine," said Khachatryan. "Coach Redondo was a very important factor in me joining Pacific, and I am positive joining this program can improve my tennis level."
