SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. - The ninth annual Battle in the Bay Classic wrapped up on Sunday as Akram El Sallaly and Bernardo Oliveira, who were competing unattached from Pacific and competing in the tournament on their own, defeated Anders Holm and Nicolas Moreno de Alboran from Santa Barbara, 8-7(6) in the men's open doubles final.
The final proved to be a nail-biter as the duo from Stockton kept it close throughout the match. El Sallaly and Oliveira started down 1-4, but went on to rally to make it 3-4. They continued to win their service points to make it 4-5 then 5-6 before tying it up 6-6. They went down again 6-7, but tied it up to force a tie-breaker after winning their service point.
With the score at 7-7 in the pro-set format, El Sallaly and Oliveira rallied to win the tiebreak and the match, 8-7(6) to earn the men's open doubles trophy.
"I couldn't be prouder of Bernardo and Akram. They acted very professional with their composure throughout this tournament," said assistant coach Danny Llarenas. "They both work very hard in practice and were willing to do the uncomfortable things today. This win is well deserved for them."
The Pacific men's tennis team continues their fall season as they head to the Aggie Invitational in Davis starting on Friday, September 29.
