STOCKTON, Calif. – The University of the Pacific men's tennis head coach Ryan Redondo has announced the addition of Philip Hjorth to the squad for the 2018-19 academic year.
"I am very happy to be joining UOP," said Hjorth. "It is a young team with great potential to do well in the coming years. The coaching staff is great and fits my personality and work ethic very well. I am excited for what is to come."
Hjorth joins the team after training and playing in Spain for the past two years. A native of Denmark, Hjorth was crowned the Danish Men's Singles Champion in April 2018.
"Philip will be a huge addition to our lineup and with his competitiveness, desire to improve, and recently winning the Men's Danish Championships I am beyond excited to see him continue to develop and grow this coming Fall," said Redondo.
Other accomplishments achieved by Hjorth include a round of 16 finishes in a Grade 1 International Tennis Federation in Austria and a semifinal finish in a Grade 2 ITF in the Netherlands. He holds a world junior ranking of 157 and a universal tennis rating of 13.24.
"I am so excited and happy to have Philip join our team," Redondo added. "Philip is an outstanding young man. His values, character, and vision for himself and his standard is exactly what we want here at Pacific. From early on in the recruiting process, I was so impressed with the way in which he held himself in our conversations, in the questions that he asked of me, and the way in which he has developed his game and his outlook on life."
Recruited by other schools such as TCU, Virginia Tech, Memphis, and Portland, Hjorth plans to major in business at Pacific.
