Colorado Springs, Colo. - With the 2011 World University Games just around the corner, Pacific men's volleyball outside hitter Taylor Hughes (Fallbrook, Calif.) was selected to participate in USA volleyball program in preparation for the 2011 games. The games will be held August 12-23, 2011 in Shenzhen, China where athletes from around the world will compete in 24 different sports.
Hughes, along with other top young men's volleyball players from around the United States tried out for the US team during the final four weekend in University Park, Pa. A U.S. Men's National Training Team inter-squad scrimmage helped serve as part of the tryout during the Volleyball Extravaganza, which was held in conjunction with the NCAA Men's Volleyball National Championship.
As a member of the 25 players chosen to be part of the program, Hughes will train with the USA National Team throughout the summer in preparation for the games in China. The final team will be comprised of 12 players selected from the initial 25 selected for the training program.
The US last medal came in 2007 when the American's took home the Bronze medal in Belgrade, Serbia. Hughes, enters the summer after a sophomore season that saw the 6-7 outside hitter selected to the All-MPSF Honorable Mention team. For the year, Hughes was No. 8 in the conference in kills after finishing the year with 396 kills (3.88 per set).
