Los Angeles, Calif. – The Pacific Men's Volleyball team will get its first action against other competition on Saturday, October 15 at the USC Tournament. The Tigers will play five best-of-three matches at the Halen Center Practice Pavilion.
8:00 AM – vs. UCLA (Court 1)
9:45 AM – vs. Cal Baptist (Court 2)
11:15 AM – vs. USC (Court 1)
4:15 PM – vs. Cal State-Northridge (Court 1)
6:00 PM – vs. Lewis (Court 2)
The Tigers are optimistic heading into the season. The squad returns a number of starters and has high hopes for the incoming freshmen. Head Coach Joe Wortmann was excited for the 2011-12 campaign saying, "we are excited for the season to begin, and to get a good look at where we are as a team."
Notable returners for Pacific include outside hitter Taylor Hughes and libero Javier Caceres who were selected as All MPSF Honorable Mention in 2011. Hughes led Pacific with 465 points including a team-high 396 kills. On defense the redshirt junior collected 100 blocks. Sophomore Caceres recorded 29 assists in 105 sets, and led the Tigers with 278 digs in 2011.
Other standouts include junior setter Patrick Tunnell and redshirt senior Sean Daley. Tunnel recorded a team-high 998 assists in his 28 starts. He finished the season with an impressive .441 setting percentage. Daley recorded 155 kills while hitting .371 for the Tigers. On the other side of the net he led the team with 116 blocks including 17 block solos.
After the USC Tournament the Tigers take a couple weeks off before returning to preseason action November 5, for matches against Stanford and Pepperdine in Fresno, Calif. at Clovis West HS.
Then the Tigers will return to the practice court preparing for their first home match against Thompson Rivers on January 5 the match start time is still TBA.
