No. 5 Pacific Downs No. 16 Santa Clara, 16-9, In First Round of NorCals

In the opening round of the NorCal Tournament at Chris KJeldsen Pool , Pacific's men's water polo team defeated No. 16 Santa Clara, 16-9. With the win the Tigers improved to 4-0 on the season.

 

The orange and black took the early 2-0 lead at the start of contest behind consecutive goals from Tom Koning and Balazs Erdelyi. Despite a goal from the Broncos on the counter attack at the 4:36 spot, Jason Wensley and Koning tallied one goal apiece while Lance Morrison notched a pair of goals to put the Tigers up with 2:18 left in the quarter. After giving up a goal to Santa Clara's James Case, Pacific closed out the quarter taking the 7-2 lead.

 

In the second frame of regulation the Tiger offense was limited to a pair of goals with Goran Tomasevic and Erdelyi finding the back of the net. For the second consecutive quarter Alex Malkis limited Santa Clara to two goals in the frame.

 

Entering the cage in the third quarter for Pacific, Joey Frantz registered four saves while limiting the Broncos to two goals. The Tiger offense continued its scoring attack against Santa Clara, as Pacific tallied three additional goals from Tomasevic and Koning who found the back of the net twice.

 

With a 12-6 lead entering the final frame, Pacific kicked of the last frame of regulation with goals from Joey Doyle and Morrison before the Broncos tallied the three consecutive goals to cut the Tiger lead to six. Pacific regained the eight goal advantage with goals from Alex Obert and Balasz Szabo. Santa Clara's Mark Davis closed out the contest tallying a goal with 46 seconds remaining on the clock for a 16-9 final score.
