Men's Water Polo Faces UC Davis In NCAA Quarters Thursday

STOCKTON, Calif. - The No. 5 Pacific men's water polo team takes on No. 8 UC Davis in the NCAA Quarterfinals on Thursday at USC. The Tigers and Aggies face off at 5 p.m. at Uytengsu Aquatics Center in Los Angeles.

Pacific advanced to the quarters with a 16-2 win over No. 17 Pomona-Pitzer in the opening round on Saturday at Chris Kjeldsen Pool. The Tigers smothered the Sagehens by racking up 18 steals and holding a 41-21 advantage in shot attempts.

The Tigers improved to 20-5 on the season with last Saturday's win, the program's third 20 win season.

Pacific is in the NCAA tournament for the third time, and second time in five years. The Tigers have finished in the top five of the final polls in four of the last five seasons.

The Tigers will face UC Davis for a spot in the NCAA Semifinals. Earlier this season, Pacific defeated the Aggies 13-10 on November 11.  Ben Stevenson and Engin Ege Colak each scored four times in that contest. Pacific surged out to a 4-0 lead and never let the Aggies back within two the rest of the way.

The Aggies have won 13 of their last 14 games, with Pacific snapping UC Davis' 10-game win streak.

Pacific has won 10 in a row against UC Davis, dating back to the 2009 season.

The winner of Thursday's quarterfinal game will face No. 1 UCLA on Saturday at 3 p.m. in the semifinals.  In the other quarterfinal, No. 12 Harvard faces No. 3 USC at 7 p.m., with the winner drawing No. 2 California in the semifinals.

The semifinal winners will meet on Sunday at 3 p.m. for the national championship.
