Stockton, Calif - Winners of three straight, the Pacific women's basketball team welcomes Florida to the Alex G. Spanos Center Friday for a 7 p.m. tip-off against the Gators.
"We're really excited that Florida is coming here to play at our place. It's a great opportunity for our program and our fans," head coach Lynne Roberts said. "They're off to a great start. It's going to be a tough game, but one that we're excited about."
The Tigers will home an eight-day layoff doesn't curb the momentum built after wins at Cal State Bakersfield, home against Southern Illinois-Edwardsville and at Nevada.
"[Winning three in a row] is a great feeling for our team. We're feeling confident, but I also know that we're not feeling that we've got it all figured out. We have some momentum, but we know we can't take our feet off the gas."
Pacific (3-3) rallied from down 10 with 2:04 to go for a 75-70 win at Nevada last Wednesday. Pacific needed 1:14 to turn a 62-52 deficit into a tie ballgame with a 10-0 run. Junior guard Erica McKenzie and sophomore guard Gena Johnson sparked the run, as Johnson opened the run with a lay-up, tied the game win a jumper, and recorded a steal in between, feeding McKenzie for her second of two three-pointers 15 seconds apart which accounted for six of the 10 points.
In overtime, senior center Christina Thompson gave the Tigers the lead for good, and junior guard Ashley Wakefield tallied five of her 17 points in the extra period.
McKenzie, with 19 points on five three-pointers, earned Big West Player of the Week honors, while Johnson finished with 15 points. Wakefield posted nine rebounds with her 17 points, and Thompson was the fourth Tiger in double-figures with 12.
Thompson, Wakefield and junior forward Ashley Smith all rank in the top six of the Big West in field goal percentage on the season.
In Florida, the Tigers will be hosting an SEC conference team in the Spanos Center for the first time. The meeting will be the first between the two programs. The Gators enter at 7-2 on the season following Wednesday's win at San Francisco, including a win over then No. 19 Florida State.
