Stockton, Calif. – Pacific field hockey resumes its 2011 exhibition schedule this weekend against Alberta at 2 p.m. on Saturday, August 20 at Maxwell Family Field in Berkeley, Calif. Then continues action at Stanford on Sunday August 21 at 12 p.m.
The Tigers return 18 players, including junior Jenna Vivian, who is the team's leading returning scorer after recording five goals and two assists in 2010. Also, senior Amanda Spellman returns after receiving All-NorPac honors last season when she started all 18 games and recorded two assists. In goal, the Tigers feature junior keeper Ashlee Schlesier, who ranks 10th all-time in Pacific history with a save percentage of .724.
The Orange and Black will look to improve on last weekend's performance after giving up four goals to UC Davis. However, Head Coach Linda MacDonald remained confident in her team saying, "I feel we made improvements in practices and scrimmages, and I do not feel last weekend was indicative of that."
Against UC Davis, Melissa Maultsby recorded two shots on goal. Also, goalkeepers Stephanie Douglass and Schlesier split time recording three and six saves, respectively.
The Pandas of Alberta will be playing their first exhibition game. As for Stanford, the game will mark its second exhibition match after playing to a 1-1 tie against Cal. Coach MacDonald is excited for the opportunity to grow from the games saying, "both the games this weekend are going to be extremely tough, but the key is how (the players) will come together as a team."
Pacific field hockey will begin regular season play at UC Davis on August 26 at 6 p.m.
