Berkeley, Calif. – Playing their second exhibition contest of the pre-season, the Pacific Field Hockey team put forth a solid effort against the University of Alberta, but fell short, 2-1, on Saturday, August 20.
The Tigers struck early when 10 minutes into the game Samantha Romero scored on a penalty corner from Melissa Maultsby. The hookup was Maultsby and Romero's first points of the pre-season and gave Pacific a 1-0 lead.
The Pandas of Alberta fought back, scoring with just under seven minutes left in the first half. The score remained knotted at 1-1 for most of the game, but after holding tough all day, the Tigers' defense allowed the deciding goal with 15:50 left.
Despite the deficit, Pacific never quit, and with just over one minute left the Tigers had a chance to even the contest. However, a cross pass was just out of reach for Emily Trudeau to take a game-tying shot.
The Orange and Black showed a lot of progress, Head Coach Linda MacDonald said of her team, "there was immense improvement from Tuesday. We played well as a unit but were a step behind with the adjustment from grass to turf."
Pacific will close out exhibition play at Stanford on Sunday, August 21 at 12 p.m. The Tigers then begin their regular season and conference campaign at UC Davis on August 26 at 6 p.m.
