Counsman Nets Two But Tigers Comeback Bid Falls Short

Stockton, Calif. – Pacific Field Hockey's comeback bid against La Salle fell just short on Sunday, August 26 on Brookside Field. The Tigers pulled within one and threatened late, but the Explorers handed Pacific its first loss of the season, 4-3. Both teams now sit at 1-1 on the season.

The Tigers jumped out to an early lead after a breakaway score by junior Paige Counsman. The play was set up by a Jenna Vivian steal in the midfield who dribbled the ball all the way to the center of the circle before dropping off her second assist of the season to Counsman.

However, just nine minutes later La Salle would grab a share of the lead after Maddie Doub beat Molly Macierz to the left side of the cage. It was the first goal allowed by Macierz after she pitched a perfect first half in the season opener.

Just over five minutes later, Counsman would answer the score with her second goal of the game and season. The score was set up after Emily Tregoning ripped a shot at the Explorers goal. After a defensive save, Counsman corralled the ball and knocked it in to make the score 2-1.

The action-packed first half still had two goals left as Mariel Papa knocked in her first goal of the season to knot the game at two. Then, with just over four minutes left in the first half Kaylee Taillon would put the Explorers up for good.

La Salle tacked on another goal in the 41st minute when Olivia Shoemaker knocked in a pass off a corner. But, the Tigers would show their resilience at the 56:19 mark. Pacific received a corner and after a couple passes senior Emily Trudeau ripped a shot towards the Explorers net that was tipped by Vivian into the goal to make the score 4-3.

The Orange and Black continued to pressure La Salle's defense, but goalkeeper Lisa Shaffer was a wall turning away every offensive attack. Trudeau had the Tigers best opportunity when she sent a shot at Shaffer that was narrowly saved in the 65th minute to leave the final score at 4-3.

The Tigers are back in action on August 31 against Bryant on Brookside Field. The contest will begin at 12:00 pm.
