Tigers Post 2-1 Exhibition Win Over Storm

STOCKTON, Calif. – Behind goals from senior Angelica Figueroa and freshman Megan Mata, the Pacific women's soccer team opened the 2011 season with a 2-1 exhibition win over the California Storm Saturday at Stagg Memorial Stadium.

Pacific struck for two first half goals, and sophomore goalkeeper Tashia Long made three saves as the Tigers won their warmup for the 2011 season.

"We got contributions from all over the field. The defense is what we knew we'd have to bring together quickly, head coach Keith Coleman said, "and we moved the ball (out of the back) quickly and pretty well. I felt that Kayla (Villalpando) had a great game today. Some of our new additions stepped up and did really well."

In the 28th minute, senior Nydia Ramos carried the ball towards the box with numbers and slotted a ball to her right to Figueroa, who finished it off to the lower left side for a 1-0 Tigers' lead.

Freshman Megan Mata extended the lead to 2-0 in the 39th minute, as she collected a give away at the top of the box turned and fired it into the lower left corner from 15 yards away.

Pacific out-shot the Storm, of the Women's Premier Soccer League, 6-4 in the first frame, and amped up their play in the second half with a 14-3 advantage in shots.

For the game, the Tigers tallied a 20-7 shot advantage and 8-4 edge in shots on goal.

But it was the Storm who got on the scoreboard in the second half, as Leah Larot came in one-on-one with Long. Long skidded to her knees to stop Larot's shot from point blank range, but the rebound ricocheted into the net to cut the margin to 2-1 with 12 and a half minutes remaining.

The Tigers used much of their bench as 17 of Pacific's 24 players saw action. Mata led all players with seven shots, including four on frame.

"We still need to work on our fitness a little bit and work out the combinations on the field that work the best for us and work the best together," Coleman continued. "I think that's one of the things we're going to spend time on this week."

Pacific will open the regular season on Friday, August 19, at home against Nevada. Kickoff from Stagg Memorial Stadium is at 7 p.m.
