Tigers Stay Unbeaten At Home With 2-1 Win Over UCSB
Stockton, Calif. – The Pacific women's soccer team earned a 2-1 victory over the UC Santa Barbara Gauchos Friday night behind goals from junior Laura Hernandez and junior Lauren Olvera to remain unbeaten at home.
Pacific got back into the win column after a dropping back-to-back one-goal matches to even their Big West record at 2-2-1. The Tigers improved to 8-6-1 overall on the season.
In the 26th minute, senior Kristina Wavomba ripped a shot from the left side of the box that was blocked by a defender. The rebound came to Hernandez, who finished into the lower right side for her second goal of the season and give Pacific a 1-0 lead.
The Tigers out-shot UCSB 12-5 in the first half, including a 5-2 edge in shots on goal, taking the 1-0 lead into intermission.
Pacific controlled much of the second half, as the Tigers tallied nine more shots to the Gaucho's two.
The Tigers extended their lead in the 53rd minute, as senior Nydia Ramos sent a corner kick into the box, where Olvera headed it in to put the Tigers up by two. Olvera, who usually sets up Tiger goals with long throw-ins, tallied her second goal of the season and the third of her career.
UC Santa Barbara cut the margin to 2-1 in the 59th minute, off a scramble in front of the net. A shot by the Gauchos' Erin Ortega was deflected by Tigers' goalkeeper Tashia Long off the cross bar. Alyssa Benjamin found the loose ball and finished to the lower right side for her second goal of the season.
Pacific held off the Gauchos the rest of the way, as the Tigers didn't allow another shot for the remainder of the half.
The Tigers owned a 21-7 advantage in shots, including a 8-4 edge in shots on goal. Pacific also attempted eight corners to the Gauchos' two.
Long made three saves in net for Pacific, as the Tigers improve to 6-0-1 at home, where they are out-scoring opponents by a 17-4 margin.
Makenna Henry earned five saves in net for the Gauchos, who fall to 6-10-2 overall, 1-5-0 in the Big West.
Pacific will play host to Cal Poly on Sunday in a noon match, the Tigers' final home game of the season. Pacific will honor five seniors: Ramos, Wavomba, midfielder Angelica Figueroa, defender Laura Hogan and midfielder Alex Topp prior to the match.
