With the 2012 regular season quickly coming to a close, the Tigers will head to Long Beach State this weekend with the conference title on the line. Entering the weekend, the Tigers sit in second place, two games back of the first place 49ers. Prior to the season, the two teams were picked as the top two teams in the conference with each receiving four first place votes.
Last season, the Tigers took two of three from the 49ers at home at Bill Simoni Field, a series victory that ultimately led Pacific to the 2011 Big West title. For the Tigers to earn at least a share of the 2012 Big West title, Pacific must do one better than a season ago and sweep the 49ers on the road. If Pacific can earn the sweep, the Tigers must get some help from Cal State Fullerton and Cal State Northridge as they need the Titans and the Matadors to take one game from UC Davis and UC Santa Barbara in order for Pacific to earn the title outright. The Aggies and the Guachos, who enter the week tied with Pacific at 12-6 in conference, each hold the tie-breaker over Pacific after taking two-of-three from the Tigers this season. Additionally, UC Davis holds the tie-breaker over UC Santa Barbara after taking their season series with a pair of victorie.
In addition to the battle for first, the Tigers and the 49ers will earn additional exposure for the conference and themselves as the two teams will play on ESPN3 on Friday, May 11. The doubleheader, scheduled for 1:00 pm and 3:00 pm, will be broadcast online by ESPN with Josh Suchon providing the play-by-play.
