PROVO, Utah - The Tiger softball team fell to #20 BYU 14-0 (5) on Saturday afternoon in Provo, Utah. Marissa Young started for the second-straight game, going three innings with seven earned and one strikeout. Haylee Moran-Rowen and Molly Bourne both went 1-for-2 at the plate in the contest.
The loss brings the Tigers to 18-24 on the year, 1-5 in West Coast Conference play while the win propels the Cougars to 31-10 this season, 6-0 in conference action.
Marissa Young started off the bottom of the first by striking out Jensen and promptly retired the Cougars in order. However in the second the hosts were able to string together handful of hits and take a 2-0 lead heading into the third.
Haylee Moran-Rowen beat out an infield single in the third to give the Tigers their first baserunner of the game. Jessica Pasco laid out a perfect sacrifice bunt to move Moran-Rowen to second and Caitlin Sung followed with a five-pitch walk. Unfortunately next batter Hailey Reed couldn't extend the inning as Bull got her to hit into a fielder's choice to the second baseman Bell, who got Sung out at second to end the frame.
BYU added another pair of runs in the third to extend their lead to 4-0. In the top of the fourth Molly Bourne led off with a single up the middle and advanced to second on a passed ball. She moved to third on a wild pitch which also walked Sydney Lahners, giving the Tigers runners on the corners. However Bull was able to get Caitlin Reynolds to hit into a double play, ending the Tiger threat.
Going the other way the Cougars put up a big ten-run fourth inning to go up 14-0 and secure the run-rule victory.
The Tigers return home after their month long road trip next weekend as they host Loyola Marymount. The series begins Saturday at 12 & 2 PM and wraps up on Sunday at noon. A live stream of all three games, courtesy of theW.tv, will be available.
