STOCKTON, Calif. - Pacific's beach volleyball season started off with the Tigers fall 4-1 at home to the San Jose State Spartans. Pacific's pair of Emily Baptista and Taylor Poncetta got the lone win on the day for the Tigers.
Baptista and Poncetta, making their beach debut as Pacific's third pairing, took down San Jose State in two sets, winning 21-19, 21-15. Baptista continually stiffled San Jose State at the net as the Spartans couldn't find any breathing room against Pacific.
The match was in doubt until the final few minutes as the pairing of Katrin Gotterba and Maycie LaBass took their match into the third set but eventually fell 21-18, 21-23, 15-11 to seal San Jose State's overall victory. Gotterba and LaBass went 6-2 last year playing together.
Lexi Elman and Andie Shelton led for much of their first set playing as Pacific's top pair but lost 21-19. The pair fell 21-13 in the second set to give San Jose State the point. Elman and Shelton had a 6-9 record last year, playing as Pacific's top pair in all of those results.
Janie Feldsher and Alex Holt as well as Skylar Wine and Ashlyn Fleming also had hard-fought first sets, with each pair losing 21-19. Feldsher and Holt would lose a contentious second set 21-15 despite a series of impressive blocks by Feldsher, while Wine and Fleming fell 21-9.
Playing in an exhibition, the pair of Wine and Olivia Petnicki lost 21-19, 21-17.
Pacific's next match will be this Saturday, March 4, when the Tigers play a doubleheader against Cal and Cal Poly. The first match, against Cal Poly, will begin at 9:00 am in Stanford, California.
