Long Beach, Calif. - Up against some of the top swimmers in the nation, the Pacific swim teams represented themselves well on Day One of the Arena Invitational at the Belmont Olympic Pool.
Sophomore MaryElla Randall sprinted her way to 16th place in the 50 Free with a time of 23.49, beating her previous season-best of 23.88. Classmate Oliver Simkovic paced the men's squad with a 17th-place finish in the 200 IM as he clocked in at 1:51.45. He topped his previous season-best by more than three seconds.
Other top-32 finishers for Pacific included senior Jayme Swalin, who came in at 24th in the 500 Free at 4:58.27, and junior Kevin Schirmer, who came in at 29th in the 50 Free at 21.18. Junior RJ Barton came in at 1:55.04 in the 200 IM, good for 31st, while freshman Casey Fleming finished 31st in the 50 Free, touching the wall at 21.24.
Just missing out on berths in final heats were senior Kevin Byers, who finished 33rd in the 200 IM at 1:55.26, and freshman Brandon Chandler, who finished 34th in the 500 Free at 4:37.33. Freshman Cooper Rogers earned a 37th-place finish in the 50 Free, clocking in at 21.35, while sophomore Taylor Moore finished a spot behind him with a time of 21.38. Junior Jenna Chaplin touched the wall at 5:02.88 in the 500 Free, good for 38th.
The men's 200 Free Relay team, made up of Schirmer, Moore, Fleming, and Rogers, earned a sixth-place finish with a time of 1:22.57. Their female counterparts took 13th place with a time of 1:35.59. Rogers, Schirmer, Byers, and Moore comprised the Tigers' 400 Medley Relay team that took eighth with a time of 3:25.24.
The Arena Invitational resumes tomorrow with men's preliminaries at 9 a.m. followed by women's preliminaries at 11:30 a.m. Check the official meet website for live results.
