Moving into a starting role for the Tigers in her second season, Cowden proved to be up to the task as she played in and started all 30 matches for Pacific. The top net defender for the Tigers in her second year, Gabby produced a team-best 111 blocks including leading the way with 13 solo efforts. Twice she set and then tied her career best mark defensively as she picked up eight blocks in two matches in a single week, first tallying eight against Sacramento State on Nov. 2 and again against Cal State Fullerton on Nov. 6. In addition to her blocking, Gabby had her finest offensive season to date as she recorded 194 kills including posting seven 10+ kill efforts on the year. Adding 27 aces, 32 assists and 103 digs, Cowden posted 283 points from her middle position in her second season of action.
Playing her first season of collegiate volleyball, Gabby saw action in eight matches for the Tigers while earning two starts. Playing behind a senior laden squad, Cowden improved steadily throughout the year as she finished the season with eight kills, five blocks and five digs for 10.5 points. Gabby's best match of the season came in conference play when she posted four kills, four digs and two blocks against UC Santa Barbara on November 14, to help push the Tigers past the Gauchos in conference play in a 3-0 sweep.
A 2009 graduate from Monte Vista High School in Danville, Calif., Cowden was a four-year starter for the Mustangs. A two-time All-East Bay Athletic League Team member, Gabby earned first team honors in 2007 and second team in 2006. She was named the 2007-08 team MVP after leading the Mustangs to a 26-8 overall record and a 10-1 first place finish in the East Bay League. The starting middle for one of the best club teams in the area, Vision, Cowden has led her team to a top-10 finish in the Junior Olympics during each of the past three seasons. Gabby was named one of PrepVolleyball.com's 2009 Top 150 Recruits and also played for the USA Volleyball National A2 Training Team. Cowden and the squad earned the USA Volleyball High Performance Silver Medal.
Born in Templeton, Calif., Gabrielle Cowden is the daughter of Helen and Jack Cowden. She has one older sister, Jacqueline, who plays volleyball at Florida Gulf Coast University. Coming from a tradition of excellence at the Division I level, Gabby's grandfather, William, was the co-captain of the 1942 national champion Stanford Cardinal basketball team. In her third year at Pacific, Gabby is a communications major.
