STOCKTON, Calif. -- University of the Pacific Director of Athletics Lynn King has announced the hiring of Greg Meehan as men's and women's swimming head coach.
Meehan just finished his fourth year as an assistant coach for the women's team at UCLA under head coach Cyndi Gallagher. He specialized in working with the Bruin distance and IM corps, in addition to recruiting duties. Meehan helped the Bruins to an 18th place finish at the NCAA Swimming Championships in 2005, after a seventh place finish in 2004. Meehan has helped coach 33 All-Americans in his time at UCLA, and has assisted in guiding the team to breaking 19 school records.
"We are very pleased to have someone with Greg's background lead our men's and women's swim programs," said King. "The experiences he has gained throughout his career will serve our programs well. We all look forward to working with Greg."
"I would like to thank Lynn King and University of the Pacific for allowing me the opportunity to become the next head coach of the Men's and Women's program," said Meehan. "I am extremely excited about this opportunity and the future of Pacific swimming. We have set forth lofty goals for this program and I am looking forward to the challenge ahead."
In the summer of 2003, Meehan served as the assistant coach for the USA Swimming National Distance Camp at the USOC training Center in Colorado Springs. The top young male and female distance swimmers from around the country were selected to attend.
Prior to his time at UCLA, Meehan was the assistant women's swimming coach at Princeton for two seasons. While at Princeton, Meehan helped coach the Tigers to a 17-0 record, including 14-0 in Ivy League competition. While at Princeton, the Tigers won the Ivy League crown in 2000 and 2001, and finished 25th at the 2001 NCAA Championships.
Before joining the Princeton staff, Meehan served one season as an assistant coach and interim head coach for the men's and women's swimming team at William and Mary.
Meehan is a graduate of Rider University in Lawrenceville, New Jersey. While at Rider, Meehan competed in the 200-yard backstroke and was a member of several MAAC conference champion relays.
Greg and his wife, Tess, have one son, Salvatore, born in December of 2004.
