2014 San Diego Labor Day Stickball Tournament Champions - The Fishsticks

Pacific's alums have been keeping active and training for alumni weekend, which for the Tiger baseball team falls on the weekend of October 3-4, as the a team full of former Tigers took home the prestigious championship at the 16th Annual San Diego Labor Day Stickball Tournament. The Fishsticks, led by Tiger assistant coach Joey Centanni, dominated the national tournament with a perfect 9-0 record en route to the stickball tournament title.

Joining Centanni on the championship podium were other Tiger standouts, Jason Haar, Mike McKeever, Josh Simms and Tiger undergraduate assistants Nick Longmire and Mike Walker. Along with a few of their friends, the team of Tigers ran through the tournament, finishing with a 6-3 win in the championship game to stay unbeaten and claim the Jillie Trophy.

The Labor Day Tournament was created by Bobby Ortiz in the early 1990s. Ortiz, a native New Yorker from the Bronx, nostalgic for the days of his childhood had the idea get some friends together in their new stomping grounds, San Diego, and bring the game they loved to the West Coast. A quarter-century later, stickball has become a staple in Little Italy of San Diego.

The alums were preparing for the annual alumni weekend that will feature a Tiger golf outing on Friday afternoon for alums, fans, boosters, and current Tigers. On Saturday, all of the Tiger alums hard work in the offseason will be put to the test as the alumni will square off against one another in a battle for glory at Klein Family Field. Batting practice begins at 10:30 am with the game to follow at 12:00 pm. The festivities come to an end at 2:30 pm with a BBQ and a Tiger intersquad game of the 2014-15 Tigers.
