PORTLAND, Ore. – Shelby Lackey carried the University of the Pacific baseball team to the series opener 1-0 victory over the Portland Pilots on Friday night.
The Tigers improve to 16-24 overall and 7-12 in conference action, while the Pilots fall to 16-25 on the season and 8-11 in conference play.
After seven scoreless innings, Keaton Glover led off in the eighth with a bunt single to third base. With one out, James Free II reached on an error by the Pilots that pushed Glover to third, who advanced to second on a ground out.
Lucas Halstead stepped up to the plate and reached on a fielder's choice that allowed Glover to score the only run of the game and give the Tigers a 1-0 victory.
"Shelby pitched like an ace tonight and kept us in a game against another very good pitcher," said head coach Ryan Garko. "I'm proud of the way we played defense behind him and found a way to execute and score a run."
The Orange and Black tallied six hits on the night with Halstead and Carter Hayes leading the way with two hits each. Kevin Sandri and Glover registered the other two hits for the offense. Halstead tallied an RBI and Glover had a run.
Lackey had a great outing on the mound picking up the win. Lackey pitched eight complete innings giving up just three hits, one walk and struck out five. Lucas Sweany earned his second save of the season with one strikeout for the final out of the inning. Eli Morse was charged with the loss after pitching eight innings with six strikeouts and giving up one run.
The Tigers return to action on Saturday, April 28 for game two against the Pilots. First serve is set for 6:00 p.m.
