Big Opening Series...

Pacific is off to its best start since 1994 after sweeping Chicago State on opening weekend. Pacific outscored the Cougars 20-6 through the three games and hit .302 as a team while the pitching staff combined for an era of 2.00.

Starting us off...

Pacific's three starters on the weekend played big roles in the series sweep. In game one, senior lefty Ricky Reynoso struck out 10 batters in only 6.0 inning of work. In game two, junior Ryan Shreve had the best start of his career tossing 8.0 scoreless innings and striking out eight batters, both totals were career bests. On Sunday, junior Tommy Costello struck out six batters in five innings of work in his debut. All three starters earned the win in their games.

Productive weekend...

Offensive production was at a premium as the Tigers scored 20 runs in three games. Five Tigers with at least eight at-bats started the season hitting .300 or better including senior Nate Verlin who hit .500 on the weekend with three RBIs and three walks.

Sandri's stellar day...

In Sunday's series finale against Chicago State, Sandri tripled twice in the game, a feat the no Tiger has accomplished since 2004.  The two three-baggers came in back-to-back innings with Sandri leading off. He is hitting .455 with three extra-base hits to start the season.

Garko Era: Year Two...

Pacific head coach and former major-leaguer, Ryan Garko, enters his second season at the helm of the program this year. He and his staff helped guide the Tigers to a four-win improvement overall and a five-win improvement in West Coast Conference play. 2019 ushers in a new season as well as Garko's first recruiting class, which looks to make a mark this season.

Junior catcher James Free II was named as a West Coast Conference Preseason Team member last week. He is coming off of a season in which he hit .283 with seven homers and 28 RBI. He will look to repeat as an All-WCC Postseason selection again this year.

Scouting the Cougars...

When the Spartans host the Tigers on Tuesday, it will be their fourth game in three days. San Jose State opened the season against Santa Clara on Sunday with a doubleheader and then swept the Broncos in a 20-10 victory on Monday night. The Spartans may be playing with a tired bullpen; they used 10 pitchers in their opening series. A win for the Tigers will be their third-straight over San Jose State.
