Stockton, Calif. - The Pacific men's basketball team opened and closed the 2012-13 exhibition season with a 66-60 win over Chico State on Sunday, Nov. 4.
The Tigers fell behind 10-6 in the early going, but used an 8-0 run to take a 14-10 lead with 10:58 to play. After the Wildcats evened the score at 16-16, Pacific pulled ahead 21-16 behind a jumper from senior Colin Beatty and a three-point play by junior Ross Rivera. The teams traded baskets the rest of the way as the Tigers held a 30-26 lead at the break. Pacific held a 24-13 rebounding advantage in the opening 20 minutes.
In the opening moments of the second half, the Tigers used an 8-0 run featuring four points from junior Khalil Kelley and four from Rivera to take a 38-29 lead with 16:33 to play in the game. The Wildcats came back with a 12-4 run to cut the Tiger lead to 42-41 with 12:12 to go. With the Tigers leading 49-48, Pacific pushed it to 62-50 at the 4:01 mark with a 13-2 run. Junior Andrew Bock stepped up in the stretch scoring seven points. Rashad Parker hit a three-pointer with 1:57 to cut Pacific's lead to 62-57, as the Tigers were held scoreless for 3:40. Junior Sama Taku and senior Travis Fulton each hit a pair of free throws down stretch to seal the win for Pacific.
Rivera led Pacific with 13 points, while Bock added 12 (10 in the second half) and Fulton pitched in with 10 points. Fulton, Kelley and Beatty each grabbed six boards to lead the Tigers. Sean Park had 14 points to lead Chico State, the preseason pick to win the California Collegiate Athletic Association.
Overcoming a slow shooting start, Pacific ended up hitting 27 of 55 shots from the field (49.1%). The Tigers held Chico State to 37.3% shooting from the field and 30.0% from three-point range.
The Tigers open the regular season on Saturday, Nov. 10, with a 7:00pm game against Holy Names College in the Alex G. Spanos Center.
