Tigers Fall At Home To Santa Clara

Stockton, Calif. - The Pacific men's basketball team dropped a 57-40 West Coast Conference contest at home to Santa Clara on Monday, Dec. 29. The Tigers fell to 8-6, 0-2 in WCC action, while the Broncos improved to 6-7 and 1-1 in the WCC.

In the opening two minutes, Denzel Johnson scored the Broncos' first five points. Alec Kobre got the Tigers on the board with a three-pointer at the 17:56 mark to make it 5-3. The Broncos hit four of their first five three-point attempts, as they extended to a 11 point lead (22-11) with 10:13 to play in the half. The Tigers held SCU to just two points over the next six minutes, with Pacific able to cut the lead to seven (24-17) with 4:33 to play in the half. Pacific scored just one more point the rest of the half on a free throw by Gabriel Aguirre to make it 28-18 at the break.

The Tigers fell deeper behind in the opening moments of the second half, as Santa Clara started with a 7-1 run to take the lead to a game high 17 points (36-19) with 17:25 to play. David Taylor capped an 11-2 Pacific run with a pair of layups to cut it to 38–30 with 11:00 to go. Jared Brownridge scored five straight for SCU as the Tigers tallied just a Bowles free throw and the Broncos pushed the lead back to 15 (48-33) with 6:57 to play. A three-point play by Eric Thompson cut it back to 12 (51-39) with 5:16 left, but the Tigers would not get any closer.

Kobre led the Tigers with 11 points, the only Tiger to score in double figures. The Tigers shot just 28.9% from the field (13-45), while the Broncos shot 48.8% (21-43). Pacific's bench outscored SCU by a count of 13-4.

Pacific is next in action with a road game at Loyola Marymount Thursday, Jan. 1. Game time is set for 1:00 p.m.
