Tigers Fall Late to Santa Clara

STOCKTON, Calif. – Despite leading for nearly the first 30 minutes of Saturday's home game against Santa Clara, the Pacific Men's Basketball team was held to just 21 second half points en route to a 69-57 loss to the Broncos. 

The Tigers drop to 11-10 on the season and are now 1-5 in West Coast Conference play. Santa Clara is now 11-9, 3-3 in the WCC.


In case you missed it

First Half

  • The score was tied once and there were three lead changes in the first half.
  • Pacific jumped out to a quick 6-0 lead thanks to a three pointer by Roberto Gallinat to open the game and a three-point play, a made layup and made free throw, by Jahlil Tripp.
  • At 14:07 Anthony Townes made two free throws to extend the Tigers lead back to six points (15-9), but Santa Clara erased the Tigers lead just over one minute later, knotting the game up at 15-15.
  • Santa Clara gained its first lead (18-17) following a made three pointer by Josip Vrankic at the 10:53 mark.
  • Pacific had a lead of least six points on four more occasions in the half. With just 2:23 remaining, Brandon McGhee scored on a turnaround jumper to give the Tigers a five-point, 32-27, lead. McGhee's basket led to a 6-0 run to close out the first 20 minutes of play.
  • Tripp scored 12 of his 14 total points in the first half. 
  • Pacific and Santa Clara matched up well, each with 11 rebounds and five assists. The Tigers held an edge in shooting from the field (54.2% - 45.5%), in points off of turnovers (4-0) and in points off the bench (12-5).

Second Half

  • Santa Clara shot 60.7 percent in the second half, while Pacific dropped to a 32.3 percent effort from the field.
  • The first 10 minutes of the second half were exciting for Pacific fans, as the Tigers put on a scoring show. Gallinat scored 13 points, which included three dunks.
  • A fastbreak dunk by Gallinat at 14:09 gave the Tigers their largest lead (12 pts) of the game.
  • The Broncos would outscore the Tigers 20-8 from 14:09 to 6:08 to tie the game (55-55) for the second and final time. 
  • Pacific scored once in the final six minutes, while Santa Clara continued to extend its lead, claiming the victory by a score of 69-57.
  • Gallinat scored 17 of his 25 points in the second half, while Townes led all players on the boards in the second half, totaling nine rebounds.


Things You Should Know

  • Pacific was flawless from the free throw line, going 7-for-7 on the night. Tripp made five, while Townes totaled made both of his attempts.
  • The Tigers have been held to 65 points or less in their last five contests.
  • Saturday marked Gallinat's sixth 20-point game this season.


Notable Performances

  • Gallinat was named the City of Stockton Human Resources Hardworking Player of the Game after totaling a season-high of 11 made field goals en route to a season-best 25 points to lead Pacific's offensive efforts. In addition, the senior guard tallied two rebounds, one assist and one steal.
  • Junior Tripp also scored in double-figures, totaling 14 points on 4-for-12 shooting from the field, 1-for-4 shooting from the three-point line, and his 5-for-5 from the free throw line. Tripp dished out a game-high four assists and snagged two rebounds.
  • Townes and Zach Cameron commanded the Tigers' defense. Townes pulled down 10 rebounds, while Cameron totaled four rebounds and two blocks. 


Up Next
The Tigers will get a much-needed break next week as they are scheduled for just one game. Pacific will not return to the Alex G. Spanos Center for competition until next Saturday (January 26, 2019) when its hosts Portland for a matinee tipoff of 1:00 p.m. Saturday's contest will be broadcasted on Spectrum Sportsnet.
