SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - The No. 14 Pacific men's soccer team was handed their first loss of the season as they fell 1-0 to UC Santa Barbara on Friday night. Curtis Goldsmith logged three saves and Andres Ochoa paced the Tigers with a pair of shots on the night.
Pacific drops to 6-1 on the year while UC Santa Barbara improves to 1-4-2 overall.
The hosts came out firing with five quick shots in the first 23 minutes of play. Offensively Pacific didn't get their first shot until the 26th minute on a header from Tristan Blackmon that just went wide of the post. The Tiger back line did a good job limiting the Gauchos in their offensive zone as UC Santa Barbara was called offsides seven times in the first 45 minutes of action.
In the 56th minute Andres Ochoa brought the ball up middle of the field and ripped a shot towards goal, but the opportunity sailed just high over the crossbar. Just two minutes later the Gauchos broke through as Curtis Goldsmith made two consecutive saves but was pulled out of position in the process, allowing Ignacio Tellechea to knock it in for the score.
Offensively the Orange and Black kept the pressure on as they looked for the equalizer. With four minutes to go in regulation, Johnatan Rico-Contreres received the ball on the left side of the box and ripped a shot towards the near post that narrowly went wide and out of play.
Friday's setback was Pacific's first regular season road loss since Aug. 28th of last season when they fell to San Jose State 3-2 (12 contests).
Pacific returns home this Sunday to face San Jose State at 7 PM. Admission to the match is free, and a live stream will also be available.
