STOCKTON, Calif. - The Pacific men's tennis team hosts their fourth home match of the season as they welcome the Grand Canyon Lopes to the Eve Zimmerman Tennis Center Friday, Feb. 16. Before heading to Santa Barbara on Sunday, Feb. 18. Friday's duel is slated for 12:30 p.m. and Sunday's contest will begin at 1 p.m.
"I am super pumped for the two matches this week. The guys have been pushing hard and finding purpose," said head coach Ryan Redondo. "It will be a big test this Friday against a talented and feisty Grand Canyon team and UCSB on the road is always a great challenge. I am really pleased with the way in which the team has responded to last week's loss to New Mexico and it's definitely going to help down as move closer to where we need to be in finishing and executing these matches."
The Tigers have faced some of the top teams in Division I so far this season as they hold a 1-6 record to begin the 2018 spring season.
In the Tigers' last outing, Ross Watson led the way with a doubles and singles win in the 4-1 loss to New Mexico. Akram El Sallaly partnered with Watson for their 6-2 doubles win, while Bernardo Oliveira picked up the other singles point for the Orange and Black. El Sallaly is 4-1 in doubles this season holding a No. 24 national ranking with doubles partner Oliveira.
The Lopes are 3-1 this season with their lone loss coming at the hands of the then No. 6 UCLA Bruins to start their 2018 spring campaign.
In the last two meetings between the Tigers and the Lopes, Pacific has topped Grand Canyon, 4-3 in both matchups.
The Santa Barbara Gauchos are beginning their season 3-2, which includes a loss to the Tigers' fellow West Coast Conference opponent San Diego.
Last year against Santa Barbara, Tadiwa Chinamo claimed a singles point and Watson secured a doubles point but the Tigers fell 4-3. In the 2015-16 meeting, Pacific prevailed over the then No. 27 Gauchos 4-3 dominating the singles matches after dropping the doubles point.
