Tigers reach final of Pacific Mountain Invite

Pacific men's tennis reached the final of the Pacific Mountain Invitational this weekend with a win a 4-3 win over Lamar on Saturday but fell to Fresno State in the championship, 4-0. The weekend's tournament was shortened from three rounds to two and moved from the Eve Zimmerman Tennis Center to the West Lane In-Shape.

Pacific battled in a seven-hour match on Saturday with the Cardinals and pushed to a 4-3 victory. The Tigers and Lamar split in singles, 3-3. Freshman Philip Hjorth won at no. 2 singles, 6-4, 6-3 to move to 5-4 on the season in singles play.

At no. 4 singles, junior Akram El Sallaly battled with Arthur Serafim in three sets and was victorious, 6-3, 3-6, 1-0 (4-0). El Sallaly has been one of Pacific's leaders in singles play this year; he's 6-3 so far this year.

Another freshman, Josef Southcombe, eased to victory at no. 6 singles, 6-1, 6-0. It was his first victory of the year in singles play.

The match came down to doubles where Pacific fell at No. 1 doubles but won at the No. 2 and No. 3 spots to clinch the match. Junior Tadiwa Chinamo and El Sallaly defeated Nicolas Mayr and Arthur Serafim, 6-3. Southcombe and his partner, junior John Horoz Garner, defeated Carlos Paton Canal and Brock Lauer, 6-2 to lock up the match.

On Sunday, the Tigers ran into a solid Fresno State team which swept Pacific at No. 1 through No. 4 singles to take the match, 4-0. Southcombe was battling for yet another win in his match at No. 5 singles. He was nearing a win in the second set, but his match went unfinished once Fresno State clinched the match.

Pacific enters its first scheduled week off of the year this week. It comes at an opportune time, the Tigers open West Coast Conference play on March 15 at BYU. But first, Pacific will take on Boise State two days prior on March 13.
