Pacific men's tennis fell in the first West Coast Conference match of 2019, 4-0 to No. 22 BYU today. Pacific only notched one win in the match, but it was a big one.
At one doubles, Pacific's juniors, Tadiwa Chinamo and Akram El Sallaly were handed their toughest doubles matchup of the season with BYU's Sean Hill and Jeffrey Hsu, who are ranked 37th in the ITA in doubles as of the most recent Intercollegiate Tennis Association Rankings from March 5. The two rose to the occasion. They took an early lead in doubles and held on to grab the big victory, 6-4. The two improved to 4-1 in doubles this season with the win.
This was the second time this spring that Pacific upset a ranked singles player or doubles team. Senior Ross Watson defeated New Mexico's Ricky Hernandez Tong, the nation's 72nd ranked singles player on February 24.
Unfortunately for Pacific, Chinamo and El Sallaly's win was the only the Tigers would get in doubles or singles. BYU took the doubles point and got wins on courts one, two and four to wrap up the match. Chinamo had just forced a third set in his match at No. 3 singles when BYU clinched. His match, as well as the ones on courts five and six, would remain unfinished. Freshman Philip Hjorth put up a fight in his match at No. 2 singles, but would fall in straight sets, 6-4, 6-4.
Pacific gets more than a full week of rest before diving back into the West Coast Conference schedule. The Tigers return home next Saturday, March 23, when the team hosts Santa Clara and San Francisco in back-to-back days. Both matches are set for 1 p.m. starts.
