Tigers fall to Cal Poly, 4-1

In a match that was a lot closer than the scoreline showed, Pacific men's tennis (4-15, 1-5 WCC) fell 4-1 to Cal Poly (11-7, 2-0 Big West) on Sunday in the final non-conference match of the 2019 season.

The Tigers narrowly lost the doubles point to start the day and then rallied back in singles and had an opportunity to tie the match a 3-3 on a number of courts, but a loss at No. 2 singles clinched the contest for Cal Poly.

In doubles, junior Ross Watson and freshman Philip Hjorth rolled to a 6-1 win on court two and moments later, Cal Poly evened things up with a 6-1 win on court three. The doubles point came down to a hotly contested match at No. 1 where juniors Tadiwa Chinamo and Akram El Sallaly nearly forced a tiebreaker to decide the doubles point but fell 7-5 to allow Poly to take a 1-0 lead.

In singles, Watson was forced to withdraw in his match at No. 1 singles with an injury to let Cal Poly go up 2-0 and a loss on court five gave Cal Poly a 3-1 lead. What was left were highly contested matches on courts two, three, four and six.

At No. 6, junior Nathan Hampton took a three-set victory to make it 3-1, 3-6, 7-5, 6-2. At no. 3, Chinamo dropped the first set, but went on to take the second and was up 4-2 in the third at the time the match was clinched. At No. 4, El Sallaly was locked in a three-set battle. He trailed by as much as 5-2 in the third set but pulled in back to 5-5 when the match ended.

The decisive match came at No. 2 singles. Hjorth took the first set easily 6-1, but went on to lose in the second, 6-2. He put together a solid third set but lost on a tiebreaker, 7-2 to allow Cal Poly to clinch the 4-1 win.

The Tigers have just three matches left in the regular season. Pacific is at home for two next weekend when it hosts Gonzaga on Friday at 1 and the Portland on Saturday at 10 a.m. The Tigers close out the regular season next weekend at San Diego.
