Tigers set for last home matches of 2019

Pacific men's tennis is set for its final two home matches of the season this weekend at the Eve Zimmerman Tennis Center. The Tigers host Gonzaga on Friday at 1 p.m. and then wrap-up the home slate on Sunday at noon against Portland. The Tigers will honor their lone departing senior, Johnathan Lieu on Sunday in his final match at the Eve Zimmerman Tennis Center.

While this weekend marks the end of the Tigers matches at home this year, there are also just three matches left in the season and its crunch time for the Tigers. Pacific needs a to mount a late-season charge to keep its hopes at a spot in the West Coast Conference Championships in Claremont on April 25-27. Just the top six teams qualify for the Championships and the Tigers currently sit in ninth in the WCC Standings. Santa Clara currently sits in sixth, the final spot with a record of 3-3. The Tigers are 1-5 and if they string together three solid performances, can still get in if results elsewhere go their way as well.

The Tigers have gone through a stretch of tough matches, but there's no time like the present to reverse their fortunes. The team has gone 1-9 dating back to March 3.

Individually, the Tigers have been led by junior Tadiwa Chinamo in singles. He's won five-straight singles matches and has not taken a loss since March 3 against Fresno State. Juniors Akram El Sallaly and Nathan Hampton are also coming off of singles wins in the team's last match on Sunday against Cal Poly.

In doubles play, it's been the junior duo of Chinamo and El Sallaly that have led the team with their 6-5 record; however, in recent matches, the hottest duo has been junior Ross Watson and freshman Philip Hjorth. The two have won four-straight matches in doubles dating back to March 23 against Santa Clara.
