Tigers win second-straight over Portland

Pacific men's tennis (6-15, 3-5 WCC [7th]) continued to build down the stretch today with a 4-1 win over Portland (7-13, 2-6 WCC [9th]).

The Tigers went down a point after doubles but got four-straight wins in singles to climb get their second-straight win and go to 2-0 on the weekend with one match to play. The Tigers win moved them into 7th in the WCC standings, they're just one spot out of sixth, which is the last place to qualify for the WCC Championships in two weeks. Pacific is 3-5 in the WCC this year while Pepperdine, Loyola Marymount and Santa Clara are all just ahead of them at 4-3.

The day started off with the Tigers starting the match up 1-0 in doubles due to a win by default on court three, however, the Tigers couldn't pick up another win elsewhere to take the point and went down 1-0.

In singles, freshman Philip Hjorth got a win when his opponent withdrew after the first set to make it 1-1. On court six, Nathan Hampton won his third-straight match 6-1, 6-4 to give his team its first lead of the day. The hero from Friday, freshman Josef Southcombe won again on court five to make it 3-1.

On court three, it was junior Tadiwa Chinamo who clinched the match for the Tigers with his seventh-straight victory on court three where he is now 10-6. He defeated Tom Hann, 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 to give his team the boost it needed in the victory.

Pacific has just one match left to play next Saturday at San Diego in a 1 p.m. match.
