Women's Basketball Opens 2015-16 With First Practice

Stockton, Calif. - The Pacific women's basketball team official opened preparations for the 2015-16 season with the team's first practice of the season Monday at Janssen-Laggorio Gym.

The seven returnees and seven newcomers on the Tigers roster went through the first full official practice as the Pacific staff installed core base principles of the Tigers' on-court philosophy.

"To a person, everyone's been fired up to get going this season," head coach Bradley Davis said. "To get the new practice jerseys on, to break out the new basketballs… all of that builds the excitement. We're excited to get going again."

It was the first official full practice for Davis as Pacific's head coach after nine years as an assistant, but a smooth transition for the program's leader.

"It wasn't that different, in terms of my eagerness for the first practice. In terms of preparation? Obviously."

"I've been for five years, so I've always heard Bradley in practice. It's nothing new for us," redshirt senior Hailie Eackles said. "To me there wasn't much of a difference. He's always been vocal in practice. It's great having him as the head coach now. I think we had a really good first practice, especially with half our players being new."

Eackles and Erin Butler are the two seniors among the seven returning players from last year. They're joined by returning juniors Unique Coleman and Emily Simons and sophomores Desire Finnie, GeAnna Luaulu-Summers and Najah Queenland.

"It's great to be back out there with the team," Coleman said of her first on court action after her sophomore campaign was cut short by injury. "It's good to have everyone back in practice gear. We're getting into the groove. I think our freshman and newcomers are doing really well at picking everything up."

Junior transfers Eli Lopez Sagrera (Southern Idaho) and Mauriana Clayton (Central Arizona), along with freshmen Tylah King, Ameela Li, Chelsea Lidy, Ariana Vaughn and Wendi Wehi participated in their first practice.

The coaching staff likewise features an even split of returnees and newcomers, as assistants Amy Starr and Alexis Mezzetta join Davis and assistant Amy (Van HolleBeke) Ferrell.

Pacific will continue the month-long preparation leading up to the 2015-16 season before a Nov. 7 home exhibition game and the regular season opener at Bakersfield on Nov. 13.
