Tigers Split Season Opener At Fullerton

FULLERTON, Calif. - The women's softball team split their first two games of the season on Friday at the Fullerton Invite. Kenya Lindstrom led an 11-0 shutout effort for the Tigers (1-1) over Buffalo (0-2) while UOP fell to Northwestern (2-0) by a final score of 7-0.

Pacific picks back up in day two of the Titan Classic with a double header against Idaho State (0-1) at 10:00 AM followed by a game versus Utah State (0-1) at 3:00 PM.

Pacific vs. Buffalo - In Case You Missed It:

  • The Tigers broke free and ignited for six runs in the top of the third inning pulling ahead with a comfortable 6-0 lead. Pacific would leave the inning with six runs off four hits, one Buffalo error, and one left on.
  • Madison Kahwaty would send a solo home run to left field adding another run to the board for UOP, 7-0.
  • A strong sixth inning affair would propel Pacific forward as a Carly Lucchetti-leadoff triple put the Tigers in scoring position and three singles would help UOP earn four additional insurance runs to extend the lead to 11-0.
  • Senior pitcher Kenya Lindstrom held a shutout through five giving up just one hit in the sixth and final inning of the ball game. She would finish with two strikeouts and retire 19 consecutive batters.
  • A three-RBI performance by Caity Sung would highlight the Tigers victory on Friday. The junior outfielder would also steal a base to add to her statline for the day.

Coach Kolze Tallies 750th Career Win:

  • Head Coach Brian Kolze registered his 750th career win for Pacific on Friday. Kolze is just one of 50 coaches in NCAA Division-1 softball history to achieve this honorabe accolade.
  • In his 27th season, the Lodi, Calif. native has been a part of 16 winning seasons and is the winningest coach in Pacific softball history.

Notables:

  • Seven Tigers recorded hits in the ball game. Lucchetti and Madison Hopper each tallied multi-hit games.
  • Jessica Mabrey, Madison Kahwaty, and Carly Lucchetti recorded a hit and RBI in their collegiate debuts for the Tigers. Mabrey led all freshmen with a double and two RBI's. The freshmen trio would tally four runs, four hits, and four RBI.
  • Lindstrom's shutout victory would be the first shutout in a season-opener since 2013. Almost exactly six years from today, Nikki Armagost was the last pitcher to do so with a 6-0 win against Santa Clara on Feb. 9, 2013.
  • This also marks the first time Pacific has scored more than nine runs to start off the season since 2007. The Tigers shutout Marshall, 9-0, to kick of their season in 2007.

Pacific vs. Northwestern - In Case You Missed It:

  • A four-run top of the first by Northwestern put the Tigers behind early on. The Tigers would have plenty of opportunities at the plate but could not drive in a run as they were kept scoreless throughout the game.
  • Bradi Kooyman would break up a Wildcat no-hitter and punch in the Tigers' first hit of the ball game with a two-out single in the seventh.
  • Hailey Reed came in relief for freshman Myka Sutherlin and made the most of her time in the circle dealing 3.0 innings and striking out five batters. Bethany Hammer also pitched an inning of work for Pacific.
