Tigers Win, But Eliminated From WCC Beach Volleyball Tourney

SANTA MONICA, Calif. - The Pacific beach volleyball team posted a win Friday in the double-elimination West Coast Conference Beach Volleyball Championship Friday, but fell in their final two matches. The Tigers defeated Portland, 3-2, but fell No. 3 Pepperdine, 5-0, and were eliminated by Santa Clara, 4-1.

In the first match of the day, fourth-seeded Pacific turned in a 3-2 win over fifth-seeded Portland.

The Pilots posted the first point, at number three as Katie Barker & Djurdjina Milovic topped Taylor Poncetta & Janie Feldsher, 22-20, 21-8.

The Tigers answered back with a win by the fours, as Alex Holt & Emily Baptista defeated Sarah Savoca & Emma Scanlan, 21-17, 21-18.

Lexi Elman & Andie Shelton posted a first set win over Tani Stephens & Cali Thompson, and after Portland eked out a two-point win in set two, the Tigers put away the Pilots in the fifth set for the victory, 21-17, 19-21, 15-8.

But the Pilots fifth pair of Lauren Naatz & Monica Gajda pulled out a three-set win over Ashlyn Fleming & Skylar Wine. The Tigers rallied to win set two, but Naatz & Gadja edged the Tigers duo in set three, 21-14, 19-21, 15-12.

Pacific's number two pair of Katrin Gotterba & Maycie LaBass clinched the match for the Tigers, defeating Hannah Troutman & Morgan Robinson. After a three-point win in set one, the Tigers were edged in set two, but pulled away in set three for the victory, 21-18, 19-21, 15-10.

But in the second match of the day, No. 3 Pepperdine was too much for the Tigers, as Pacific's top pair of Elman & Shelton picked up the only set victory by the Tigers.

Elman & Shelton rallied from down a set for a 21-19 set two win, but fell in three to Delany Knudsen & Madalyn Roh, 21-14, 19-21, 15-12. Corinne Quiggle & Brittany Howard posted a win for the Waves at number two, over Gotterba & LaBass, 21-9, 21-13. At third, Skylar Caputo & Heidi Dyer turned in a win over Poncetta & Feldsher, 21-5, 21-5. The Waves tallied a win at four as Anika Wilson & Deahna Kraft prevailed over Holt & Baptista, 21-8, 21-10. And Fleming & Wine fell at five to Nikki Lyons & Sarah Seiber, 21-5, 21-11.

Pepperdine improved to 20-3 on the year and advanced to Saturday's semifinals against Loyola Marymount.


In the third match of the day, Pacific was edged by Santa Clara as five sets were decided by two or three points, including two three-set matches.

Santa Clara posted the first point at three, as Hailey Lindberg & Taylor Laugero topped Poncetta & Feldsher, 21-10, 21-17.  The Bronco fifth pair of Erin Reineking & Callie Jones nipped Ashlyn Fleming & Skylar Wine, 21-18, 22-20.

The Tigers answered back with a win at four from Holt & Baptista, 21-14, 17-21, 15-12, over Tatiana San Juan & Michelle Gajdka.  But the Tigers top pair of Elman & Shelton were clipped in set three after rallying for a 21-11 set two win as Nikki Hess & Allison Kantor emerged with a win, 21-18, 11-21, 15-13.  At number two, Gotterba & LaBass also posted a win in the second set, but fell in the third to Jensen Cunningham & Kirsten Mead, 21-18, 16-21, 15-5.

Holt & Baptista won a pair of matches on the day, but the Pacific season concludes at 4-10.
